'Hwang Hee-chan comes off the bench' as Wolverhampton come from behind to beat Newcastle 1-2



Wolverhampton Wanderers (England), with Hwang “Bull” Hee-Chan coming off the bench, suffered an upset loss to Newcastle United.

Wolverhampton fell 1-2 at home to Newcastle United in the fourth round of the 2024-2025 English Premier League (EPL) at Molineux Stadium in Wolverhampton, England, on Saturday (Sept. 16).

Wolverhampton are yet to win this season, having drawn one and lost three since the start of the campaign.

They have dropped to 18th place (1 point) in the standings.

Hwang Hee-chan, who was called up by national team coach Hong Myung-bo to play in the A match and scored the first goal in the 10th minute against Oman on Tuesday, started the match from the bench.

Hwang came on for Jean-Lucner Bellegarde in the 26th minute of the second half with the team up 1-0 and saw time on the left flank until the end of the game.

Wolverhampton opened the scoring in the 36th minute, capitalizing on a counterattack opportunity.

Jorgen Stranlarsen drove the ball down the right flank, beating his man to the ball, before whipping a ground-ball cross into the box, where Joao Gomes slipped the ball between his legs and Mario Lemina slotted it home with his right foot to give Wolves the lead.

Wolverhampton pushed for a second goal in the 17th minute when Larsen headed home from Lemina's early cross but was denied by the keeper.

They then fell victim to a pair of Newcastle strikes from distance.

Fabian Schurrle's thunderbolt in the 30th minute broke the deadlock.

After Bruno Guimarães dropped back slightly near the penalty area, Cher unleashed a powerful right-footed strike from about 30 meters out that found the top corner of the net.

Five minutes later, Newcastle's Harvey Barnes scored a wonder goal.

Picking up the ball near the top of the left penalty area, Barnes broke through to the penalty arc and curled a right-footed shot into the top corner of the net to break the deadlock.

Wolverhampton pushed for an equalizer in stoppage time through Mateusz Cunha's right-footed volley, but were denied by a fine save from the goalkeeper.
